I've been driving past this place for at least 20 years on trips to Tampa for both business and pleasure. When you cut across the state horizontally on Highway 60, you can't miss it, just a few hundred yards west of the Turnpike. It's been a trading post since the 1880's, & the current building dates back to the 1930's -- I believe the upstairs rooms over the bar/restaurant were at one point a brothel -- so, no question, the place has a place in Florida's history. I believe it is also on the state's list of historical landmarks as well, so, there you have it. My brother lives in Tampa, & this last weekend, we decided to go see the FSU v. UF football game in Gainesville as our one annual game. He lives in Tampa, so I usually have to drive to his place the day before, then on the day of, he'll drive there and back (usually Tallahassee for home games, obviously) on game day, & on the following Sunday, I drive back home from Tampa. Well, this Sunday was dreary & wet, and I hadn't slept much during the last 36 hours, so I was exhausted. My bladder's strength was at an all-time low. A few minutes from bursting, & about 90 minutes into my trip home, I find myself pulling into the Desert Inn to use the facilities, & maybe have a drink (it had just turned noon) just to say I had done it (finally). I walk in, & was greeted by a fresh-faced teenager behind the bar saying "Sit anywhere you like, I'll be right with you." There were two other couples in the place, & despite it being lunch time, no one had meals in front of them, just drinks. While I'm absorbing the visual atmosphere w/ my eyes, I begin to absorb to actual atmosphere w/ my nose, and it is rank, dank, musty, dusty, rusty, moldy, & less vintage than just plain old. It's been maintained, but just barely, & as I'm looking around, I remember that I'm about to wet myself on account of the 4 cups of coffee I drank in the morning. Seeing the restroom doors on the other side of the room, I make my way there, & as I get closer, I realize how thin the doorways are -- not standard doors by any stretch. I actually had to turn sideways & side step to get in and close the door behind me. The lone toilet wasn't as old as the building, thank goodness, but it was definitely older than me, & there was a little hand written note on the window sill just above it saying "Please don't put ANY PAPER in the toilet. Thank you. Management." Nice. This made me pretty weary about what might have been in the trash can in the corner just between the toilet & the sink. I got out of there quickly, and pretty much made up my mind to just break for the exit & leave, but the young girl who greeted me gave me a big smile as I walked out of the restroom & asked what I was drinking, so now I felt obliged. I noticed they carried a light beer from Puerto Rico I drank way to much of on my last few visits called Medalla, & actually asked her hesitatingly if they had it cold. "Well, of course we do," she laughed and disappeared through a giant purple swinging door into the back as I sat down @ the bar, & came back out the same door while it was still swinging w/ the bottle. "I would have guessed you drank Miller," she laughed as she twisted off the cap for me & placed it on the bar. I guess I look corn fed or cheese headed, I'm not sure. "Want to see a menu?" was her next query, and I really was hungry, so I figured why not. "Sure. What's the house specialty?" I ask. "Our burgers are pretty famous" she offered, & I confirmed her statement with the menu, which had their "Famous Burger" under the sandwiches category. "Medium well, lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup and mustard please." Then came the waiting. No TV's to watch, no music to hear, no view to see, no breeze to enjoy, just sitting and waiting. The two couples had grown to 4 up until my order, & shortly thereafter, a motorcycle "gang" of about 12 guys in their late 50's and early 60's came in & basically took over the place, Now, ALL I could hear was them talking, ALL I could smell was fuel from their boots & exhaust from their clothes, ALL I could see was them. A family of 5 actually came in a few moments after them, & took one look at Hell's geriatric angels, spun around, & went back out the door. At first, I thought they were intimidated, but I realized by the end of my visit, they knew that w/ everyone that was inside, it would be an hour before they ate. Nearly finished w/ my beer after 20 minutes, a small bell rang at a pass-through in the wall next to the purple door -- an order was up! But unfortunately, it wasn't mine. This was a meal that one of the other couples had ordered before I had even come in! The waitress must've sensed my disappointment as she walked by me with the sandwiches, b/c she said "Yours should be right up." Well, 2 dings & 20 minutes later, I had my prize. Remember what a burger from your middle school's cafeteria looked like? Yeah, like that. Bigger than a slider, but not by much.

This place is what it is...a small hole-in-the-wall place that has good simple food. It's close off the turnpike, the place is clean, and the staff is pleasant. The menu is small: burgers, BBQ chicken, fried fish, a couple of salads, BLT. The place is a designated historical site and there are a bunch of interesting tchotchkes around the walls. We were served by one of the owner/managers, a gruff but friendly Massachusetts transplant. He was great with our kids and we had fun talking with him. The BBQ chicken sandwich was a generous portion of chicken that was moist and tender with a sweet BBQ sauce. The burgers were an 8 oz thick patty with a choice of cheese as well as lettuce, onion, and tomato and were cooked to order. Both came with fresh hand-cut french fries that were hot and just perfect! There is nothing fancy about the place, but it was a detour well worth taking.

This place is an absolute antique and important piece of Florida History! Built in the 20's and has operated almost continuously in the same building untouched by time. If you are looking for new decor or an applebees menu it's not the place for you, if you like Great Burgers and old Florida Charm then it is that. We stopped in on 01/27/15 after hearing it had new owners and was open again, let me tell you the service was best it's ever been and the new burger menu is fabulous! I had the Cowboy burger, 8 Oz. of tasty Angus beef, Swiss cheese and grilled onions with big well done steak fries, it was delicious! The owner was there and involved with the customers and made sure our food and service was great. We will stop again every time we pass thru there!

AWESOME! This place is in the middle of no where. It is a historical landmark. It is old and ulgy. Not even lipstick can help this pig. The bathroom was nasty! Looked like the roof had been leaking. The service was actually great the food was fantastically awesolucous. We got a deep fried burger and a Hawaiian burger. Yeah, just let me say that again deep fried cheeseburger. The burger patty tasted like meat fresh meat the egg in my burger taste like a chicken laid it out back. The bacon was so crisp and fresh, like it was local pig. The food was so hot I knew it was freshly off the grill. Food was just outstanding! This is like magic food truck food in the middle of no where. I will this place as top notch. But it is dirty and old with even dirtier secrets.

After a week of decadent indulgence while staying at The Breakers in Palm Beach, it was time to head back to Tampa and settle into a more normal routine. This meant no mints on the pillow during the nightly turn-down service, no freshly-laundered terrycloth robe hanging in the over-sized walk-in closet each morning, and worst of all -- no more lobster corndogs with a bourbon old fashioned at night. We set the east coast of Florida into the rearview mirror, and stopped to gas up at the Pilot service station in YeeHaw Junction before plotting another thrilling drive through Indian Lake Estates, Lake Wales, Bartow, and Brandon along Florida Rte. 60. But first, how bout some lunch? The town of YeeHaw Junction consists of one traffic light, two gas stations, and The Desert Inn Bar & Restaurant. During the late 1800s the Desert Inn was a trading post, and it features prominently in the historical fiction novel known as "A Land Remembered". Back in those days, this little crossroads in the middle of nowhere was called Jackass Junction......which is kind of fitting if you've ever been stuck behind an 18-wheeler hauling citrus along Rte. 60. So, for a total laugh, my business associate and I pulled in to the Desert Inn to see if we could snag a couple of burgers before the long boring drive back home. Now, let me first of all say that this place is the exact opposite end of the spectrum from The Breakers. Rooms at the Desert Inn go for $45 a night, but I'm told they are spotlessly clean with fresh linens and plenty of hot water. Larry and I wandered around the downstairs bar & restaurant, taking in all of the historical photos and newspaper clippings before finally settling into a booth and looking over the menu. According to our server, they are known for their burgers, and so we both ordered double cheeseburgers and sat back with our sodas to wait. Our server was incredibly friendly, and come to find out that she's the owner's wife, Roxanne. "Oh, and that's my husband back in the kitchen. Wave to these nice fellas, Ralph!" Well Holy Good Gawd Almighty, you should have seen the size of these double cheeseburgers when she finally set them down in front of us. I swear each patty was probably a third pound of meat with melted American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a side of onion rings. And may I say that they were incredibly delicious!!! You might laugh at historic Florida Cracker Cowboy Country in YeeHaw Junction, but do yourself a favor and stop by there sometime for a terrific burger.

We spotted the desert inn on the way to Westgate river ranch and immediately thought we had to check it out. Long shady history and very quant and rustic allure. We stopped In tonight and found a wonderful young lady by the name of Mary. She was such a joy and really made the night. It was our anniversary and they went to great lengths to entertain us. I did not get the name of the owner/chef but he is quite the character cooks and served up an excellent burger. I up sized my bacon cheese burger with caramelized onions to what I think was called the brontosaurus burger which was 12oz. It was so so good. Very tender fresh burger seasoned very well. Loved it. We had a marvelous time and will definitely come back. That being said this is a place for the free spirit and adventurous. No frills. Building used to be a brothel and is at least 90 years old and smells like. Hours can very may want to call ahead.

The service wasn't the greatest, but the burger was! The place was a very pleasant surprise for me. It's a dive with great food! I'll be going back!

I just used the bathroom but had to document that the Desert Inn exists. It's a bar and historic site in one - at the intersection of routes 441 and 60. (The building was a trading post in the 1880s.) There's also a hotel but it seems you have to call a number posted in the office door to rent a room. The bar had a chalkboard menu that listed bar type food and Cuban sandwiches. Only a few patrons around the bar at. 3 PM when I was inside but now that it's on Yelp it'll get busier.

Historical site - pretty neat. However, the restaurant needs to be cleaned and updated. It was so quiet and dark I felt like I was in an episode of The Twilight Zone. I wish I would of read the reviews before eating here! About to leave after we walked in but.... We were already there and had to go to the bathroom. There is a sign on the door saying bathrooms for customers only. Now reading the reviews that the burgers are good wish we would have ordered burgers but we didn't. Got the chicken wings and hot dog. Prices not that great but not horrible. Food Just ok nothing special. Service not that great. Sign that says no refunds for motel. I can only imagine what the inside of a room might look like. There is an old brothel upstairs. The history is what brought us to stop and there is a sign that says yours of upstairs when available 4.00. Of course, not open, not enough staff so no tour. Doubt it would be worth the 4.00 a person anyway.

horrible, stay away, worse service i've experience in years across the whole country. restrooms were a literal cess pool, took over 30minutes to get our order when there was only one couple ahead of us and it was only a hotdog and onion rings that we had to return 3 times to get correct. the waitress was extremely rude and dirty. you could hear the staff in the kitchen cursing and arguing in loud voices. then the bill was incorrect and the waitress wouldn't even speak to us. the owner/cook had to tell her to give us the check. i was looking forward to the reopening because we drive past a lot but won't use the place if i break down in the parking lot.
